What Is Blood Oxygen (SpO₂)?
Blood oxygen, usually shown as SpO₂, is an estimate of how much oxygen your red blood cells are carrying. It is one piece of information about how your body is moving oxygen from the air into your bloodstream, but it cannot explain your overall health on its own.
What does SpO₂ mean?
SpO₂ stands for peripheral capillary oxygen saturation. In plain language, it estimates the percentage of hemoglobin in circulating blood that is carrying oxygen.
Hemoglobin is a protein inside red blood cells. It picks up oxygen in the lungs and carries it through the bloodstream to tissues throughout the body. An SpO₂ reading is intended to reflect how fully loaded with oxygen that hemoglobin is at the measurement site, often a fingertip.
You may also hear the term “oxygen saturation.” In everyday use, people often mean the same thing when they refer to an SpO₂ reading from a pulse oximeter or wearable.
How is blood oxygen measured?

What is a typical SpO₂ reading?
For many healthy adults at or near sea level, pulse-oximeter readings are often in the mid-to-high 90s. But there is no single number that can be safely interpreted apart from the person, their baseline, their environment, the device, and how the measurement was taken.
People who live at higher elevations may have readings that differ from those commonly seen at sea level. Some people also have health conditions or care plans in which their clinician uses individualized oxygen-saturation goals. That is why comparing a new reading with your usual pattern can be more useful than reacting to one isolated number.
An SpO₂ reading is not a diagnosis. It cannot tell you why a measurement is higher, lower, or different than expected, and it should not be used to self-diagnose a lung, heart, sleep, or circulation condition.
Why can SpO₂ readings change?

Can a wearable accurately measure blood oxygen?
Wearables can offer a convenient estimate of blood oxygen trends, especially when readings are collected under similar conditions over time. They are not a substitute for clinical assessment, and the result can be affected by fit, motion, skin contact, blood flow, and the device’s measurement process.
It helps to view wearable data as a prompt for questions, not an answer by itself. For example: Was the reading captured during sleep, after activity, or while your hands were cold? Is it a one-time outlier, or does it appear repeatedly under similar conditions?
If you use a wearable, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for fit and measurement conditions. Avoid comparing readings from different devices as though they are directly interchangeable. A change could reflect a device difference rather than a change in your body.
How should you think about SpO₂ trends?
A single SpO₂ value has limited context. Looking at patterns can be more informative, particularly when you compare readings taken at similar times and under similar conditions.
Still, “trend” does not automatically mean “problem” or “improvement.” A gradual change might reflect altitude, sleep position, a temporary respiratory illness, sensor variability, or many other factors. It may also have no clear explanation from the data alone.
